01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

The inviting aroma from the grill at Sanpeido (三平堂) in Nishiarai is enough to make you pause. Inside, each rice cracker is carefully grilled by hand, filling the shop with a simple, freshly made aroma.

One of the signature offerings is the hard-baked rice cracker: satisfyingly firm to bite, it releases the rice’s natural sweetness and savoury flavour with every chew. The flavours range from tamari soy sauce, known for its deep richness, to sugar-glazed crackers that balance the aroma of soy sauce with a gentle sweetness, as well as fragrant pepper and sesame. There are spicy options made with garlic or ichimi chilli pepper, too, making it enjoyable to choose a few to suit your taste.

You can buy them individually, starting with just one, or choose a box or bag—handy for tea at home or as a gift. The shop opens at 8 am, so stopping by during a walk and taking home a few flavours that catch your eye makes for a pleasant start to the day.
